Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun, Inc. donated $41,000 in support of weekend Backpack Buddy programs

Thursday April 13, 2017 – Leesburg, Va. – The Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun, Inc. (BBFL) donated $41,000 to 18 local groups that support Backpack Buddy programs in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS).  The donation amount ranged from $500 - $15,000 depending on the number of students they support.

“BBFL is dedicated to financially supporting all the Backpack Buddy programs in the County and to share learnings about program administration by collaboration,” said Daniel L. Hampton, President & Founder. “We provide financial donations, food and a forum for discussion to help ensure that no student goes hungry over the weekend.”

During the current school year, there are 82 schools and 3,683 students receiving supplemental weekend food through backpack buddy programs.  Backpack Buddy program participants confidentially receive bags of food to help sustain them through the weekend.  Typical items include breakfast cereal, shelf stable milk, hearty soups or ravioli, tuna, applesauce and snacks. Other programs packed by the LEF/LCPS Backpack Coalition provide family serving sized items like baking mix, canned vegetables, pasta, sauce and peanut butter.  Many programs also send supplemental food prior to winter and spring breaks.

“We want to thank all of the groups for their continued support of the students in Loudoun County that rely on their program every weekend.  They are a vital link in our community and the Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun is happy to recognize their efforts,” said Hampton.  “Our donations today are only the beginning and we look forward to continuing our partnership to provide meals to students in need and working towards our mutual goal of eliminating the current food insecurity issue that thousands of students face daily.”

The groups that received donations were the LEF/LCPS Backpack Coalition Program, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Galilee Church, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Dulles South Food Pantry, Destiny Church, Leesburg United Methodist Church, Ashburn Presbyterian Church, Church of the Holy Spirit, Mountain View Elementary School, St. David’s Episcopal Church, St. Theresa Catholic Church, Mount Olivet UMC, Harmony Middle School PTA, Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church, Mill Run Elementary School and Hamilton Baptist Church.
